nutrition tips

Great nutrition tips are always appreciated. I am happy to share some with you here today. By discussing healthy diets, I hope that what I have learned brings many benefits to you and your health.

Let's get started by defining nutrition. Nutrition is defined as the provision to cells and living things of the necessary nutrients to support life. Just as your cells need proper nutrients to sustain themselves, if your cells are healthy, you are healthy.

Today, many of the common health challenges that we have today are a result of poor nourishment. And what is worse, the nutrient value in most of our food is not what it used to be.

They used to say, "An apple a day, keeps the doctor away!" Well, there's one of those common nutrition tips! And while it may be true that consuming fresh organic fruit like this delicious red apple may be a great start, there is much more we need to consider to complete the picture for great health.

There is a food pyramid that most of us are familiar with that breaks down the food groups that make up healthy foods for us as part of a balanced diet.

Let's find out about the seven components of good nutrition.

nutrition tips There are seven categories of nutrients that the body needs to acquire from food: protein, carbohydrates, fiber, fat, water, and vitamins and minerals.

For protein, here are some helpful nutrition tips: choose lean meats, eggs, beans, soy, nuts, and lowfat dairy products like milk, yogurt, and cheese. Proteins are made up of amino acids that are obtained through your diet and are necessary for proper muscle synthesis and other necessary cellular functions. Men, on average, generally need 50-60 grams per day, and women need 40-50 grams per day.

Carbohydrates can be found easily in whole grains, like bread, pasta, rice, and cereals. Beans and potatoes are also good sources. Choose high quality carbohydrates for high nutrient value, ones that are processed as little as possible. For example, brown rice and whole grain bread are preferable to white rice and white bread.

Fiber is necessary for proper digestion and elimination. Foods rich in fiber include beans, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and certain fruits and vegetables like broccoli and potatoes. To add fiber to your morning routine, consider mixing in some psyllium seed husks or flax seeds to your breakfast cereal or smoothie.

For fats, the ones to avoid are trans fats and saturated fats. These are mainly found in meats and dairy products, bakery items, and just about all processed and fast food today.

If you aren't sure, read food labels carefully, or ask, since many food suppliers are now making an effort to remove these from their products.

Unsaturated fats, both mono and poly, are the good fats, which you need for great brain and nerve health. The best sources for nutrients are from plants, such as olive oil, avocados, nuts and nut butters. Omega 3s are especially good for you, so you should include this supplement in your balanced diet.

Water is the most essential nutrient that you can consume. Here's some great nutrition tips for water:

For proper hydration, it is recommended that you drink oxygen rich and negatively charged alkaline water, and you should drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water each day. So if you weigh 160 pounds, you should drink 80 ounces of water each day. That's 5 of those 16 oz. bottles you can buy at the store. And if you drink caffeinated beverages or alcohol, add in another drink of alkaline water to compensate for each one.
